I never thought I'd join a sorority in college, let alone become president of one. I’m used to working behind the scenes, having people tell me what to do. Leadership roles always intimidated me and when stepping into leadership positions I’m usually unsure and hesitant. But coming from out of state I was seeking a community where I could find comfort in, and that’s when I found APhiG and crossed with my wonderful line of 10. I always want to be part of something bigger than myself, and I quickly found how much I cared about sisters and how they had become my family here in Colorado. Looking back, when I first came into the sorority I had such a hard time speaking up, I was absolutely terrified of putting myself out there. Because of APhiG I was able to gain more confidence in myself and my abilities, and I’ve grown so much from the opportunities I’ve been given. I have so much appreciation to give to the sisters I looked up to so much. It is because of their support, their belief in me, and seeing potential in me that I’m in the position that I’m in. Because of our members I’m constantly reminded of the importance and meaning of what we do as an organization. I hope to continue to learn what it means to be a leader and a sister of APhiG. Here’s to seeing our chapter continue to grow and flourish.

Coming from a  community where there was a lot of diversity to a predominantly white institution was definitely a challenge because finding others who related to me was hard. I was only able to find a small group of friends that were POC and even then I still wasn’t able to find a solid Asian community for me to relate to. Joining the sorority has definitely made a difference in my life because I was able to connect with so many different people and got to learn so much about their identities. Entering into the MGC community in general as well has allowed me to be more comfortable at CSU. Coming into CSU without a very strong support system from my family made my first year very difficult because no one else in my family had been to college  except for my older sister who is only a year older than me and was still navigating college like me. Being able to be a part of a community where I did have a lot of people who did relate to me and who were able to help guide me did make my experience in college better. Since many of our sisters had majorings that were very similar, it made taking my classes a lot easier too because there were people who I either could have studied with or those who had already taken the class and were able to give advice on how to study for the class. Not only did the sorority help me build a community, it also helped me develop skills that I probably would have never developed if I didn’t take on the leadership positions that I did. I am so thankful for this sorority giving me the opportunity to be President because now I am able to face any type of situation that might appear in the future. Being in the sorority has given me a professional setting for me to be able to work in a team with many different individuals. Something that I would eventually have to face in the real world as well. It helped me develop more of my critical thinking skills as well as understanding how to delegate tasks and trying not to pile on so many things, which is something that I had struggled with all my life. Regardless, being a sister in the sorority has made so many memories that I’ll never forget and I am forever grateful for the sorority helping me be the person I am now.

To be honest, I never pictured myself in a leadership position and I wasn’t planning on being president this year but here I am doing the two things I never thought I would do. It started when my cousin, Holly, introduced me to APhiG and the people were pretty cool so I joined a few months later. Then I crossed Spring 2019 with Rho RIDE·OR·D!E$ who taught me new things and showed me what it takes to be a leader because #linestuff. During my time active I have held many positions that help me develop different skills. I have also picked up my three littles and everyday they teach me how to be a good role model.

I cannot imagine my life without being a part of Alpha Phi Gamma and meeting all the members. Now as president I hope to make more memories and become the best leader I can be.

Never in a million years would I have envisioned myself where I am today. I would say I grew up soft-spoken, shy, and with a tendency to avoid leadership roles as much as possible. As I grew older, I slowly started to gain more confidence in myself as a leader as well as my own skills and abilities. I still doubt myself often when it comes to making decisions, but I am ultimately driven by helping others to succeed and putting them before myself. However, even if everything hits the fan and chaos ensues, as long as I can find a little humor in the situation, I know everything will be just fine.

When I first came to Colorado State University, I never pictured myself in a sorority, let alone becoming the president of one. I initially joined without intentions of making it all the way through, but I ended up falling in love with the organization and the sisters within it. Over the past four years, I have learned what it truly means to be a leader, advocate, and sister. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to cross a class, serve on the Multicultural Greek Council Executive Board and Order of Omega Executive Board, and finally become president of our beautiful Theta Chapter. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for all the amazing members within this organization, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for APhiG.

Coming from Hawai’i, it was a hard transition into college. I grew up surrounded in a mixed cultural community and it was a cultural shock to be thrown into a community as a minority and not knowing anyone here. My first year in college, I struggled with homesickness and thoughts about wanting to move back home. It wasn’t until I discovered APhiG and I thought, “Why not give it a chance?”. As I got to know more of the members and really understood what it means to be a member of this sorority, it gave me a sense of home away from home.

Joining this sorority gave me experiences I wouldn’t have had if I had not joined. I learned independence of being away from home, time management, the ability to learn more about the community and how to get involved, and leadership. Now serving as the President of Alpha Phi Gamma National Sorority, Inc. I hope to learn more about myself and in this leadership position. I can’t wait to see what the next year will bring.

As an International student from Malaysia, I never imagined that one day I will be in a sorority. It is an incredible honor to be able to cross into this amazing sisterhood with a line of ten. By serving different positions, I am able to learn different skills that will benefit me in the future. As sisterhood chair, I learnt how to organize events that allow sisters to bond. As secretary, I developed accuracy and good attention to detail. Philanthropy chair allowed me to promote Asian awareness as well as our national philanthropy, fighting against domestic violence towards women in our community. Being able to serve as Ritual Chancellor aka New Member Educator in Spring 2018 and crossed six new members into our sorority was the biggest accomplishment for me. And now, I am here serving as the President of Alpha Phi Gamma National Sorority, Inc. and is hoping to develop my leadership skill. The sorority has shaped who I am today, and I am forever grateful for it.
